Chat GPT, Gemini from Google, Grok, Perplexity, Claude ... there are many AI tools that are creating new opportunities but also new challenges to retaining existing web site traffic.
As with Search Engine Optimization, content on a web site matters. As with SEO, there are factors we can control, some we can influence, but also there's a lot beyond our control.
Tracking results from AI tools is much harder than tracking traffic from search engines. Some shows up as engine traffic, but other traffic will show as referral ... and some times there may not be any traffic at all, because the AI response has answered the question the searcher was trying to find.
As starting points for an AIO project we take the following steps:
1. review web site analytics
2. evaluate results for chat sessions in a number of AI tools.
3. evaluate which sources are used by the AI tools for priority searches
We've found that content-rich pages can get picked up. We especially like FAQ pages.
We've found that once pages are doing well in AI tools, they tend to continue to do well. Moving up is hard.
We've found there are significant differences in how the AI tools respond to prompts and questions.
